Guiyang Healthcare Vocational University is the earliest vocational school in Guizhou Province dedicated to healthcare. It is the first full-time public undergraduate vocational school and the only vocational university with a focus on healthcare in China. The university was founded in 1939, and in 2021, it was approved by the Ministry of Education and the Guizhou Provincial Government to be converted into Guizhou Healthcare Vocational University. Over the past years of its establishment, the university has cultivated nearly 70,000 technical and skilled talents in the field of health and wellness. It has been recognized as a national advanced vocational education institution, one of the first national pilot schools for emergency education, an advanced grassroots party organization in the province, a model vocational college, a high-quality vocational college, a high-level vocational college, and a demonstration unit for integrating medical and health services. In recent years, we adhere to the vocational education type, focus on healthcare characteristics, uphold the school motto of "Erudition to excellence,Virtue to Goodness", and adhere to the educational philosophy of "craftsmanship and integration of knowledge and action". Our main train of thought is to "establish high-level standards, promote healthcare, strengthen specialties, and promote industries", with the main path being "strengthening connotation, strengthening specialties, strengthening integration, and strengthening characteristics". We continuously build a high-level training base for health and wellness technical talents, and export the "Kang Da" model for the high-quality development of vocational undergraduate universities.
The school covers an area of 1248 acres. The main campus is located in the Guanshanhu District, adjacent to the Olympic Sports Center. It comprises 14 academic institutions, including the College of Marxism, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, College of Medical Technology, College of Public Health, College of Clinical and Rehabilitation, College of Health Management, College of Medical Engineering, College of Smart Eldercare and Modern Housekeeping, College of Sports and Cultural Tourism, College of Ophthalmological and Optometric Technology, College of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Continuing Education, and the College of International Education. There is also one Grade A tertiary directly affiliated hospital. The campus features modern comprehensive training buildings, smart classrooms, science and innovation buildings, a library, an athletics field, an indoor sports hall, an academic activity center, an auditorium, and other learning and living facilities, with a collection of over 1.4 million books in the library.
The university currently has more than 13,000 enrolled students, with a total of 677 full-time teachers. Among them, 410 hold master's degrees or higher, 608 are dual-qualified teachers, and 349 have titles of associate professor or above. Over 30 teachers have been awarded national and provincial vocational education distinguished teacher titles, skill masters, industry professors, and titles such as the Most Beautiful Worker. Nearly a hundred teachers hold positions as directors, vice directors, and directors in national and provincial academic societies.
The university is actively implementing national strategies to address aging populations, promote a Healthy China, and advance the Healthy Guizhou initiative. It closely aligns with six major industries: health and pharmaceutical manufacturing, eldercare services, sports for health, health management, health tourism, and health food materials. The university offers 17 undergraduate majors, including a leading major in health and rehabilitation, with pharmacy and rehabilitation therapy as its two wings, and health management and medical technology as its supporting “one leading, two wings, two supporting” “122” professional clusters. There are five nationally recognized backbone majors, and more than 50 projects have been approved under the provincial talent training quality improvement project, the Prosperous Guizhou People Action Plan, and the Skills Guizhou Key Support Program.
The university actively promotes the "Three-Education" reform and serves as the leading unit for the professional construction and talent training projects in the health, medical care, and eldercare service industry chain among vocational colleges in the province. It has implemented the integration of secondary and higher education. In collaboration with Central South University, it established the "Nursing Xiangya Class" to explore a talent training model that integrates vocational and general education. The university has five industry-oriented colleges, including "Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ethnic Medicine." It has developed 193 high-quality open courses and new teaching materials for undergraduate vocational education.
The university has been approved as a key project of the "National Strength Project" by the Ministry of Education and has established the "Public health training base of Guizhou Province." It has built 11 platforms, including a provincial-level intelligent rehabilitation production-education integration training base, a clinical emergency training center, and a healthcare resource bank. There are six provincial-level bases for professional skills competitions in eldercare services and other fields. The university collaborates with nine vocational colleges, including Bijie Vocational College, to jointly nurture students. It has close cooperation with nearly 100 hospitals and enterprises, both inside and outside the province, and supports the establishment of three provincial-level production-education integration enterprises.
In the past three years, the faculty and students have won over 50 awards in national and provincial skills competitions, innovation competitions, and entrepreneurship competitions. Among them, they won the first prize in the national vocational college "Traditional Chinese Medicine Traditional Skills" competition. The university has also received nine first prizes in provincial vocational education teaching achievements, educational research achievements, and provincial teaching ability competitions. The employment rate of graduates has consistently exceeded 92% in the past five years. The certification rate for "1+X" certificates in eldercare, childcare, and housekeeping management is as high as 97.00%.
The university focuses on high-level platform and team construction, adhering to the overall concept of "three elements in one, four domains progressing together." It is committed to promoting the health of the people, with a focus on areas such as nursing, food, and medicine in the healthcare field. The school has consolidated four research and innovation directions, including product research, development, and technological innovation. It has been approved for three provincial-level innovation teams, including the Guizhou Healthcare Research Team, the Aging Industry Development Research Team, and the Guizhou Vocational Undergraduate Ideological and Political Theory Research Team. The school has established 10 campus-level innovation service teams and multiple high-level research and service platforms, such as a national-level pharmacy demonstration production base, the Guizhou Province Healthcare Product Engineering Research Center, the Guizhou Province Aging Industry Development Research Center, and the Guizhou Province Healthcare Collaborative Innovation Center. In the past three years, the school has completed 84 national and provincial research projects and obtained 82 authorized patents.
The university has established six online and offline social service platforms, including a provincial community health education base and a healthcare online network college. There are 15 recognized professional skill levels, including eldercare nurses, infant care attendants, traditional Chinese medicine preparation workers, public nutritionists, and health managers. The school has formed 16 teams for AHA (American Heart Association) training, skills competitions, and social training in health-related fields. It has introduced and developed a total of 197 training and service courses.
In the past three years, the university has provided services and assistance to over 20 enterprises, institutions, hospitals, and villages. More than 1,000 professional and technical personnel have been dispatched to complete training, popularization, and technical services for over 72,464 individuals.
The university has hosted the first "China-ASEAN Internationalized Healthcare Vocational Education Development Forum" and co-organized international exchange activities such as the "Big Data Empowerment · Smart Healthcare Forum." It has engaged in exchanges and cooperation with universities, educational institutions, and enterprises in countries and regions such as Canada, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand. The university has established demonstration courses for the China-ASEAN Colorful Smart College. It is one of the three national Sino-German health and eldercare nursing training project bases designated by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). In collaboration with the Canadore College in Canada, the university has jointly built an overseas "Traditional Chinese Medicine Laboratory." It has also collaborated a "Clinical Rehabilitation Center" with MAHSA University in Malaysia.
In the past three years, the university has trained nearly 1,000 international professionals in fields such as eldercare nursing. It has successfully joined the "China-Africa-Europe Traditional Chinese Medicine Lu Ban Workshop Cooperative Community." The university has become a member unit of the Global Craftsmen Alliance (Asia-Pacific Region) and serves as the Vice Chairman Unit of the first council of the National Healthcare Industry Production-Education Integration Community. Additionally, it holds the position of Observer Unit in the Council of the Lu Ban Workshop Construction Alliance.
In the new era, on a new journey, and on new tracks, the university will be guided by the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. Focusing on building an education powerhouse, a science and technology powerhouse, a talent powerhouse, and contributing to the construction of a Healthy China, the university will center its efforts on the "Four News" and target the "Four Modernizations" and the "Strengthening Provincial Capital" initiatives.
